Clan Donald Living History: Mingary Castle
Mingary Castle, 13th-century fortress located on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, was
the historic home and stronghold of the Clan MacIain of Ardnamurchan, one of
seven Chief lines. Founded by Iain Sprangach MacDonald, the third
son of Angus Mòr MacDonald, 4th chief of Clan Donald, the castle’s strategic
position allowed them to control the northern entrance to the
Sound of Mull essential to protecting and expanding Clan Donald’s Lordship of
the Isles. Surrounded by water on three sides, the castle sits on a rocky,
coastal promontory overlooking the westernmost point of mainland Great Britain.
Following a major renovation project completed in 2016, the ancient MacIain
stronghold has been transformed into a luxury hotel and restaurant offering
Donalds the opportunity to literally dwell within their living history.
